Heron Island

Australian Holidays Ad

The Great Barrier Reef which is located just off the shores of Heron Island in Queensland, is at the top of the scale when it comes to world class diving. Heron Island has been welcoming divers since the early 1930’s and is now attracting divers from all over the world. It is a true coral cay that lies in the Tropic of Capricorn 70 kilometres north of Gladstone and there are around 30 sites within a 15-minute boat ride from the jetty and one of the most photogenic of the islands is the Heron Bommie. From the moment the island comes into sight as you fly in over the azure blue waters, it quickly becomes apparent of the coral drop perched in an infinity of blue.

With the visibility at around 20m there is no shortage of action as you swim with underwater creatures such as wobbegong sharks, turtles, white-tip reef sharks, eagle and manta rays, moray eels, parrotfish and sweetlip to just name a few. It is certainly not over-dived and the fish are almost tame. There are some great places for the novice diver and some excellent bommies located off Masterhead Island which is just south-west of Heron Island.

The manta rays that you can see while you are diving are something of a sight! These friendly, curious, interactive flying behemoths are everywhere and create a blissful setting as they glide through the crystal clear waters. Many can be sighted below as well as from the top of the water lever as you slowly cruise over the reefs Along with the wonderful diving adventures that you can have while you are holidaying on this pristine island escape; you may also like to check out the other fun filled activities such as a game of tennis, sunset cruises, helicopter flights, wildlife presentations, fishing charters and stargazing. Whatever you wish for, you will find it on Heron Island.
